Honorable Mention
Out of My Gourd
Gray Squirrel

At an office party the other day,
I drank too much...
Very intoxicated, but
People started treating me
Like they used to...

Very animated, everything funny,
A lot of laughter, and not only
From me, nor at me...
Fun all around, oddly enough,
Since I typically just
Keep my own company.

Pity it happened that way,
It took me days to recover...
But contrary to what might be typical,
I remember it fondly.

The strangest thing I remember doing
Was to point out an invisible
Spherical object hovering near someone,
Which I claimed was talking to them,
And I asked them if they saw it...

"Don't you see it? ...it's talking to you..."
Pantomiming the shape, to their left,
At arms length, about 5 inches in diameter...
"I don't know what you're talking about,"
They said...

"Right here!" ...spinning my hand over
The shape of it...
"I think it's your Grandmother..."

No one laughed at that.

***

There's a familiar road I travel,
And at one point along that road,
It stops being familiar...
I think "that sign shouldn't be there..."
or "that tree isn't right" or
"This turn wasn't here..."

"I've missed my turn, I've
Gone too far..."

It happens every time
On that stretch,
Then, I crest a small hill,
And there I am,
Back in familiar territory.

It's always like that.
